An echocardiogram (echo) is a test that helps doctors evaluate the strength and function of a child’s heart. The test uses sound waves to create a picture of the heart.
The above video demonstrates a echocardiogram in two children undergoing cancer treatment. This video was designed to educate parents and caregivers by showing actual patients receiving treatment. Our intent with this video is to help you, and your child if you chose to show it to them, understand what will happen when your child has this procedure.
Performing an Echocardiogram
In preparation, a clear, cold jelly is placed on the chest. The person doing the test (technician) will move a small round handle (transducer) across the chest that sends sound waves to the heart. Having an echo does not hurt or have side effects.
